Suspicious suitcase leads to school evacuating building

Teachers work on keeping the Northwest Heights students together as they make their way to the intermediate school while the police investigate the school.
Taken by itself it would seem suspicious but not unprecedented, read a little further and you will see a pattern. That raises it up a few notches. This could be a probe or dry run.

DURANT – The Northwest Heights Elementary School was evacuated this morning after a suitcase was found taped to a slide on the playground.

There has not been a bomb threat, but authorities are treating the device as a possible explosive and plan to detonate it on site. A perimeter was set up around the school.

Durant Police Lt. Johnny Rutherford said at the scene that the suitcase was found at approximately 9 a.m. The students were sent to the Intermediate School and parents were allowed to pick their children up if they chose to do so.

Word of the evacuation spread quickly this morning. Many concerned parents went to the scene to ask about their children.

According to Rutherford, The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is bringing a robot from Oklahoma City to reach the device. OHP Bomb Technician Robert Daws is on the scene and Rutherford said they plan to remove the suitcase from the slide and detonate it on the playground. Residents who live on the north edge of Olive Street will be asked to leave their homes or at least stay in the front area of their houses away from the playground.

Rutherford said a national news station aired a story recently about terror threats to schools. Police Chief Gary Rudick told Rutherford that Midwest City and Oklahoma City had incidents that appeared to be similar to the incident this morning after that story was broadcast.

Additional details were not available at press time.

All of our schools should have exterior cameras with broadcast to local law enforcement. In the era we are in, and will continue to be in for years to come, there should be a way for law enforcement to quickly evaluate a situation before police arrive at the scene.

  2. BuckeyeTom Says:

That being said, I am NOT in favor of cameras at general street locations.

  3. Ronin Says:

Then slow down and stop running redlights Tom.

  4. Caratacus Says:

Appears to be a probe or dry run to me. Even dry runs expend resources of law enforcement. Even if it is a hoax it still utilizes precious resources to investigate it.

  5. velvethammer Says:

Why don’t schools have exterior cameras? The idea to have them broadcast to local law enforcement is a good one.
The threat of terror non withstanding, there has been violence in our schools from children going off the deep end. And now with the added terror scare it is not rocket science.

‘Cmon officials get off of your butts and put some security measures in place to protect our children.!!!!

  6. cavmom Says:

Want to wake up those who are snoozing on the fence, just attact our children.

I agree with a point that Caratacus makes ~ Every hoax or ‘dry run’ takes resources. Continuous threats will spread us out. I hope more citizens step up and fill the gaps.

    attack… I really don’t speil wel :D

  8. Ice Ranger Says:

They updated the story on their Web site. Turns out it was all a misunderstanding.
