In a joint operation involving the FBI and Spanish police, two Pakistani nationals were arrested yesterday in Madrid and Barcelona accused of financing international terrorism. Anar Muhammed Shan and Preces Mehmood Sandhu are believed to have been channeling funds obtained through drug trafficking to finance radical Islamic terrorist groups in Pakistan and other countries.

During searches at four addresses in Madrid and Barcelona yesterday, police seized evidence of bank transfer orders to Arabic countries worth €53,000 euros, €7,000 euros in cash, documentation, computer files, video tapes as well as a number of mobile phones.

A spokesman for the Spanish Interior ministry explained that the operation began in October 2005, since when investigators claim to have detected around a million euros worth of illegal transactions using the ‘hawala’ money transfer system.

The photo shows the outside of the property at number 98, Avenida del Carrilet in Hospital de Llobregat, where one of the two men was arrested.
