The powers that be had no Constitutional right to do what they did.

There is a state law that prohibits the confiscation of guns. “Provides that the powers granted the governor and local governmental officials during disasters or emergencies do not authorize the seizure or confiscation of a firearm except when a peace officer may disarm an individual if the officer reasonably feels endangered. SB410.” Prior to this one there was the NRA backed Act 275, forbidding the confiscation of firearms from lawful citizens during declared emergencies.

The lesson here is clear. In a disaster situation you need to organize and depend on yourselves and neighbors. Because of this incident and the stupidly of the police involved in it; if another disaster situation emerges honest law abiding Americans may engage the police.

Had the residents been bunkered in and sent one representative to speak for them while others watched their backs the story may have been different. Never surrender your weapon; the cops are not there to prevent crimes they respond after the fact.

The lesson is to never, ever tell them the truth. Always ask for a search warrant. Always ask for a lawyer. When the SHTF hide your guns.

  4. Ronin Says:

A close friend asked me about my comment about engaging the police so I will clarify it. Remember people were shooting at the police at the time. I realize that was probably why they were told to confiscate all weapons. Had they approached this with an orderly and systematic method and had some type of accountability. Recorded serial numbers, passed the owners a receipt and promised a 27/7 security presence I would not have any issues. I do think it would have been smarter to leave a weapon in each home as a deterrent. They could have recorded the information on who had what where and left the owners with some protection. The key here would have been a plan to return private property when the situation improved.

What those cops did was rob Americans and leave them defenseless. There is no way to know how many weapons were taken and how many of those wound up in some cops collection.

Under the understanding that they would be left with no weapon, no protection and no help-yes, I think the homeowners defending themselves was warranted. One thing is certain, force would have been necessary to take my weapons. A gun and a badge should never give anyone a license to steal from people they are paid to protect.

  5. Ronin,

I concur. A badge is not a license to violate the Constitution.

    Cheers
