NEW YORK (Reuters) – A Pakistani woman suspected of links to al Qaeda and charged with trying to kill American interrogators in Afghanistan is mentally unfit to stand trial, according to her psychiatric evaluation.
Aafia Siddiqui, 36, is “not currently competent to proceed as a result of her mental disease, which renders her unable to understand the nature and consequences of the proceedings against her,” U.S. District Judge Richard Berman said on Monday while reporting the results of the evaluation.
Berman ordered a hearing on Wednesday to discuss how to proceed with Siddiqui’s case, including the possible use of medication to treat her.
Prosecutors say Siddiqui, a U.S.-trained neuroscientist, while detained for questioning in Afghanistan, grabbed a U.S. warrant officer’s rifle and fired it at the interrogation team, which included two FBI agents. The warrant officer then shot her with his pistol.
She was brought to the United States to face charges of attempted murder and assault.
Her arraignment was delayed after Siddiqui, a practicing Muslim, refused to submit to a strip search or cooperate with prison doctors.
Defense lawyers and prosecutors both argued the frail-looking Siddiqui should undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Human rights groups had declared Siddiqui missing for five years before the incident in July, when she was arrested outside the governor’s office in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province.
U.S. officials say Afghan police found documents in her handbag on making explosives, excerpts from the book “Anarchist’s Arsenal” and descriptions of New York City landmarks.
In 2004, the FBI called Siddiqui an “al Qaeda operative and facilitator who posed a clear and present danger to America.”
Her lawyers have said she may be a victim of torture and believe she was kidnapped with her children in March 2003 in Karachi, Pakistan, and secretly held in custody for the past five years by either Pakistani or U.S. authorities.
A five-member delegation of Pakistani parliamentarians last month met Siddiqui for three hours at a prison medical facility in Fort Worth, Texas, where her psychiatric evaluation took place. They said she should be released and repatriated to Pakistan.

Hi,
I understand your anger and outrage for Islam and Muslims. However, if you are someone who has read and researched about Islam you should already know that Islam does not preach hatred and murder. Perhaps it is just a matter of you not wanting to accept the facts and you choose to believe the media and what the online sources inform you.
I believe that no religion is wrong as we are all taught to develop tolerance, peace and love. Anything immoral is wrong in any religion. The terrorists who kill thousands of people and claim to be muslims can not be Muslims as they go against the teachings of Islam. Same goes for Christians, Jews or Hindus etc…no religion preaches this and hence, they cannot belong to any religion..they are messed up extremists.
Daily many Americans kill hundreds of Muslims in Palestine, Iraq and other muslim countries. What about the tortures they carry out in Guantanamo Bay? Are those inhuman tortures carried out by Muslims?
Even after knowing all this…I cannot and should not assume that ALL Americans are diabolical. Just like you should not assume that all muslims are crazy fundamentalists.
It is not even a matter of religion when it comes to good or evil…it is about human nature. We need to be a good human being first.
One more thing I would like to say is anyones belief or faith is something very personal and close to the heart…even if you do not understand it you can not go ahead and make unpleasant conclusions. If you read about her life I think it proves that her Marriage to Muhammad made her strong and enlightened, she always looked up to him.

It saddens me that people who have no tolerance for Islam overlook the ideal life of Muhammad which was undoubtedly stainless (If you have read about his life from other sources than the unreliable internet you should already know) and they choose to dishonor him by picking out areas of his life and making a mess out of something they do not want to understand.
I hope I have gotten across to you what I was trying to say. None of it was to offend you, but I wrote just in hope that you might understand at least a small percentage. No Religion is bad…it is just individuals. I hope we learn to be better human beings.

In the end, it doesn’t matter what you believe about islam or anyone else we always advice people to judge islam on its merits and the actions of professed believers and those that praise them.

Lets deal with the issues you have brought to the ‘table’ as it were.
Islam is a hypocritical system not merely a ‘religion’ as you put it. Muslims do indeed preach a ‘peace’ but it not the Western version of peace where Christians, Jews or atheists are left alone to live their lives as they see fit in non Islamic countries. Islam if researched correctly from THEIR INFORMATION shows that there is much more to them than preaching ‘peace’ as you call it. Yes they preach morality, forgiveness but they also incite hatred against Jews, Christians and others. All you have to do is go online to and read up on islam from the multitude of Islamic websites to see if I am truthful or not.
That is the first problem with islam it is a system that takes away individual religious freedom and replaces it with a so called ‘tolerance’ but it is not a safe tolerance as we have in America or other Western countries.
If I were you I would investigate how Sharia laws would destroy the basis of the freedoms you enjoy.

This comment shows that you believe in the flawed theology of ‘Inter-faith-ers’ which under Islamic law would have no protection you would be a ‘kaafir’ since you believe all religions go to the same place. If you took the time to study Theology of various religions their concepts are quite different as is their God’s, Doctrines etc.
Islam as I have tried to explain to you is more than a religion. Therefore those who are ‘muslim’ terrorists are doing so because of the political part of islam. They are following muhammads example from his various battles against those who rejected islam.

In regards to Aisha in the Hadiths it is quite shocking for a ‘prophet’ of a God to take a child bride. This of course with the varied news articles of child bride abuses in muslim countries does not make the practice in the 21st century look any more moral than other oddities in islam like mutah marriage etc.
In case you haven’t noticed or bothered to read online almost every religion has critics of one anothers morality or lack thereof. Being critical of islam or any other religion isn’t really surprising.
I find it interesting in a sad way you consider muhammads life ‘stainless’ and yet he was the leader who ordered the deaths of thousands both in Arabia but outside of the middle east in various raids and battles.

I do not think I need to reply in as much detail as you have just given your own view on points that I had already discussed and expressed.
I just want to say a few things.
It shocks me to hear you say that “You will be hard pressed to find Christians (Or others) who are part of a political system that enforces wholesale bloodshed and carnage on unbelievers.” If you choose to be blind to whats going on in this world then theres nothing I can do about it.
If you specifically choose to look up sites (and let me tell you there are many sites out there which give the wrong image of Islam…Including Yours)…that are against Islam then I would suggest you broaden your search.
To be really honest..I am NOT a scholar of Islam…I am just a Muslim and I try to follow my day to day religion. For me Islam is a way of life and my religion tells me how to be a better human. My faith is based on being a better person and trying to treat with love and kindness those who are in your life…whether they be muslims or non muslims.
Anything extreme is against Islam. Muhammad did not murder. He only fought wars when it was necessary to do so. By necessary I mean in order to keep safe his people against the other armies which were already prepared to start a war. You can not just let people attack you and watch in peace. You see, Islam is so fair, it condemns the killing of women and children during a war. It even condemns cutting down of trees and burning of fields. However, I know while Im writing this that nothing I say will touch you or move you the slightest bit.
The basis of any religion is faith. Whats the difference between Christianity and Islam? Muslims believe in 1 God and that Muhammad is His last Prophet. Christians believe in God and that Jesus is his son. And incase you do not yet know…Muslims and Christians believe in the same God. The only difference is that you do not accept Muhammad as a Prophet whereas we accept Jesus..yes, as a Prophet and not the son of God (with all due respect…I do not mean to offend you). Believing that Jesus is a Prophet he has a lot of respect and importance in my life, and the lives of Muslims. You may not believe it, but his role is very important in Islam, and in this world.
I just want to conclude by saying that I am not preaching. Just stating my point of view. Extremism in any religion is wrong….if Muslims kill non muslims in the name of Islam, they are doing so out of hatred, and it is unacceptable.
I sadly feel that you are doing the same. You want to spread hatred because thats all you have in your heart for Islam…..so how are you any different?

You made the accusation of Christians killing and so forth in the name of Jesus but cannot come up with one instance in the 20th or 21st century to prove your point. Also Jesus did not require Christians to kill in his name.
I have looked up multiple websites that are written by muslims. These include islam online and several others. Each website is made up of various sects of Islam and of course since they are all garbled about what islam is or is not it is little wonder muslims don’t have a clue about Islam.

Does Islam condemn those who would kill women and children. No of course not the supposed rules mentions that women, children and older folks can be killed if they offer assistance to those who are fighting warrior muslims.

I don’t spread negativity about islam I simply comment on it. I cant convince people with human arguments. It is Jesus who can argue better than I. In fact the Jesus of the Bible reaches out to muslims in ways that Sharia laws cant stop.
Jesus will convince you to follow him. It is he that can reach into you spiritually and change your heart and mind. Read up on Jesus and see if Muhamamd was like him.
Jesus alone convinces people to follow him. He did so to me and will do so to you and your fellow muslims.
