D-Day, Normandy, France. June 6, 1944

Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944

By Ronin, 6 June, 2009. If you have never read the history of the D-Day landing (Operation Overlord) you should. You should also teach it to your children. It shows more about human bravery and determination that any other story I can think of. 150,000 plus men from at least six nations slugging it out to control the French coast line.

Many think it was one large battle but in reality, it was much bigger, massive invasion forces arrived in over 5000 ships, airborne troops dropped behind enemy lines, free French fought as insurgents, American Black troops raised hundreds of balloons under fire to help stop German planes from strafing the beach. Multiple targets and beaches hit by wave after wave of troops. Endless waves of aircraft and other war machines all spewing death. Every conservable military tactic had been used by the days end, deception, and direct assault, fire and maneuver and on it went. Men, machines, extreme violence, bravery and cunning all combined to show the world what real strength looked like. A feat that has never been repeated; it was not needed because of these men.

The Germans knew they had the tactical advantage; they had months to train, fortify and prepare positions. Quick reaction forces practiced and readied themselves to close any hole along the wall of murderous military might. The Germans were convinced this battle was going to completely crush America and her allies forcing them to surrender.

The Americans and their allies essentially had one goal, overwhelm the Germans and seize the coastline. This series of battles was much more than bruit force. The battle was the calculated use of bruit force, determination and shear balls mixed into a large soup bowl and fed to the troops, it was Americas chance to thump their noses at the Germans and announce we are here and we are staying.

The Americans and her allies involved in the battle or supporting it literally saved the free world. A world threatened today by enemies that have had long periods to infiltrate, fortify their positions, to make preparations and ready themselves. An enemy that believes victory is assured and that it is near; sound familiar?

Today our enemies are legion and think the big push is coming. Our enemies plan to cripple America and force her surrender. Their one miscalculation is the sons, grandsons and great grandsons of the men that fought 65 years ago today.

Thank you to those would took the banner of freedom and held her high. Now rest my friends. Sit this one out pop; we got it from here.

God Bless America!
