Ohio Election Worker Has Car Stolen With Voting Materials Inside

Luckily, the thief didn’t get ahold of any ballots, just a voter signature book and some miscellaneous odds and ends ; however, if I were living in that particular district, I don’t think I’d be very comfortable with some criminal punk running around with my personal information at hand…

Election worker’s car stolen on her way to the polls

Voting at Smith Elementary School was delayed for a brief time Tuesday morning because a poll worker’s car, containing a voter signature book, ballot transfer case and paper canisters, was stolen just as she was preparing to drive to the polling location.

Massillon police reports indicate the poll worker, a Second Street NE woman, had started the car to warm it up around 5 a.m. and went back inside her residence for a moment. When she returned, she saw a man wearing a yellow shirt in the driver’s seat. When she yelled at the man, he put the car in gear and fled north on Second and turned east on Cherry Avenue NE.

The incident was a first on Election Day here, according to Jeanette Mullane of the Stark County Board of Elections.

“This is the unusual situation that occurs on Election Day,” Mullane said. “We try to plan ahead for the known possibilities. This incident is in the realm of the unknown that does happen … but not that often.”

Board of Elections officials were able to quickly recreate the books that were needed and get the other supplies to the Smith School polling location within minutes after the 6:30 a.m. poll opening.
