Banking sector back to profit, insurance fund in red: FDIC

WASHINGTON — The US banking industry returned to profit in the third quarter, but the government insurance fund went into deficit for the first time since 1992, regulators announced Tuesday.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said commercial banks and thrifts earned a collective 2.8 billion dollars in the third quarter.

This came after a collective 4.3 billion dollar loss in the second quarter, and the profit was well above the 879 million dollars the industry earned in the same period in 2008.

But the sector is still feeling the effects of the deep financial crisis triggered by a collapse of the US housing market and global credit crunch.

“Today’s report shows that, while bank and thrift earnings have improved, the effects of the recession continue to be reflected in their financial performance,” said FDIC chairman Sheila Bair.

More than 26 percent of all insured institutions reported a net loss in the latest quarter, and total loan balances declined by the largest percentage since quarterly reporting began in 1984, the FDIC said.

As projected in September, the FDIC’s deposit insurance fund balance fell below zero for the first time since the third quarter of 1992.

The fund balance of negative 8.2 billion dollars reflects a 38.9 billion dollar contingent loss reserve that has been set aside to cover estimated losses over the next year.

The FDCI report showed total loans and leases declined by 210.4 billion dollars, or 2.8 percent, during the quarter.

Loans to commercial and industrial borrowers declined by 6.5 percent, residential mortgage loan balances fell by 4.2 percent, and real estate construction and development loans dropped 8.1 percent.

“There is no question that credit availability is an important issue for the economic recovery,” Bair said.

“We need to see banks making more loans to their business customers. This is especially true for small businesses that rely on FDIC-insured institutions to provide over 60 percent of the credit they use.”

So, I’m sitting here watching Glenn Beck on the internet, and my two-year-old daughter comes over to me and sits down on my lap to watch the show.  Now, it should be pointed out that she is a little behind on her vocabulary skills, but I don’t worry about that because I know even Einstein didn’t start talking until he was about three-years-old.  Anyway, just out of curiosity, I asked her, “who is that?”  She looked up at me with a quizzical look of contempt (as if I were an idiot for asking such a silly question) and said quite clearly and distinctly, “Gwenn Beeeeck!”

Yup, it’s moments like that that make me so damn proud of her!

WASHINGTON (AP) – A senior administration official says President Barack Obama is prepared to accept some Taliban involvement in Afghanistan’s political future and is inclined to send only as many more U.S. troops to Afghanistan as are needed to keep al-Qaida at bay.

The assessment comes from an official who has been involved in the president’s discussions with his war council about Afghanistan strategy. The official was authorized to speak to The Associated Press about the discussions but not to be identified by name because the talks are ongoing.

Aides say the president’s final decision on Afghanistan strategy and troop levels is still at least two weeks away, but the emerging thinking suggests he would be unlikely to favor a large military ramp-up of the kind being advocated by his top commander in Afghanistan [General McChrystal].

House guidelines for Presidential put-downs

House Rules Committee Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY) has released a helpful, updated primer for members regarding their conduct on the floor and in committees.

Especially useful: The section on how to properly insult the executive branch in the in the chamber.

“Disgrace” and “nitwits” — okay.

“Liar” or “sexual misconduct” — ixnay.

Under section 370 of the House Rules and Manual it has been held that a Member could:

• refer to the government as “something hated, something oppressive.”
• refer to the President as “using legislative or judicial pork.”
• refer to a Presidential message as a “disgrace to the country.”
• refer to unnamed officials as “our half-baked nitwits handling foreign affairs.”

Likewise, it has been held that a member could not:
• call the President a “liar.”
• call the President a “hypocrite.”
• describe the President’s veto of a bill as “cowardly.”
• charge that the President has been “intellectually dishonest.”
• refer to the President as “giving aid and comfort to the enemy.”
• refer to alleged “sexual misconduct on the President’s part.”

Our Dark Overlord said during his glorious Health Care Deform speech,

“Reducing the waste and inefficiency in Medicare and Medicaid will pay for most of this plan.”

So, is he saying that if his Health Care Deform plan doesn’t pass, he will maliciously keep the waste and inefficiency in Medicare and Medicaid?

I mean, think about it.  If he knows that reducing waste in Medicare and Medicaid can pay for his Commie Health Care Deform plan, then why did he not first introduce legislation to fix those problems with Medicare and Medicaid and then use those “savings” to pay off the national debt, bail out banks, promote “green energy” or, whatever?

And, since he did no such thing, then it only stands to reason that if his Commie Health Care Deform bill doesn’t pass, he will continue to ignore the “waste and inefficiency” in Medicare and Medicaid.

Iranian Atomic Work Nears Bomb Capability, U.S. Says

Sept. 9 (Bloomberg) — Iran’s nuclear work is approaching a “dangerous and destabilizing” point at which the Persian Gulf country could build a bomb, the U.S. envoy to the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency said.

“Iran is now either very near or in possession already of sufficient low-enriched uranium to produce one nuclear weapon, if the decision were made to further enrich it to weapons grade,” Ambassador Glyn Davies said today in a statement prepared for the IAEA’s 35-member board of governors, which is meeting for a third day in Vienna.

This “moves Iran closer to a dangerous and destabilizing possible breakout capacity,” Davies added, in some of the strongest comments yet used by a U.S. official about the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program. He repeated President Barack Obama’s overtures to Iran for direct negotiations and said the administration in Washington is committed to a negotiated resolution to the international dispute over Iran’s work.

Iran, holder of the world’s No. 2 oil and natural gas reserves, is under three sets of UN Security Council sanctions for refusing to halt uranium enrichment, a process to isolate an isotope needed to generate fuel for a nuclear power reactor or, in higher concentrations, to make a weapon. The government in Tehran says it wants to generate power and rejects Western allegations that it seeks to build an atomic bomb.

‘Weapons Option’

“We have serious concerns that Iran is deliberately attempting, at a minimum, to preserve a nuclear weapons option,” said Davies, in his first IAEA meeting since being appointed by Obama.

IAEA inspectors reported last month that the Iran “has not suspended its enrichment-related activities or its work on heavy-water-related projects as required by the Security Council.” The agency said it can’t exclude the possibility that there is a military purpose to Iran’s nuclear program.

“Against the background of the evidence available it is inexcusable that Iran continues to refuse any degree of transparency or cooperation in clarifying these outstanding issues,” France, Germany and the U.K. said in a joint statement today in Vienna.

London’s Verification Research, Training and Information Center calculates that 630 kilograms (1,389 pounds) of low- enriched uranium could yield 15 to 22 kilograms of weapons-grade uranium, enough for the production of a device under the supervision of an expert bomb-maker. The IAEA says Iran has more than 1,500 kilograms of low-enriched uranium.

There are no small races. If Mr. Quiqqle were running for dog catcher I’d still want you to know about him.
The more offices that are held by political outsiders the better.

The more offices held by people with real experiences in the real world the better.
I don’t know if this guy is as good as he seems, but he’s definitely a step in the right direction.


Small State Senate Race in Florida May Explain Entire Future of National GOP

It has been my contention for the past decade that when it comes to politics, as Florida goes, so goes the nation.

Think about the 2008 presidential election. First, following the CNN-YouTube debate, the last major Republican debate to be held before the Iowa caucus, our firm polled Floridians for the Florida Chamber of Commerce. We asked respondents who won the debate. A then-unknown candidate was the clear winner, and the boost he received in Florida gave Mike Huckabee a win in Iowa just over a month later.

The tipping point in the Republican presidential contest was Florida Gov. Charlie Crist’s endorsement of John McCain in that state’s GOP primary. Soon afterward, McCain won an upset victory in New Hampshire. It propelled him to the nomination.

Then in November 2008, a large, disenchanted contingent of independent voters, who in prior years had tilted Republican, switched sides and put Florida in the Barack Obama column.

This past year our polling firm, InsiderAdvantage, was named one of the three most accurate national pollsters for that 2008 race. That distinction came to us from the polling guru that Time magazine named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the world. So now the heat is on us to get 2012 right, as well.

That’s why I’m focused on an apparently obscure state Senate special election race in a region dominated by greater Jacksonville. By coincidence, this nationally syndicated column is based out of that city’s newspaper, the Florida Times-Union. The election is to replace a distinguished senator who died a few weeks back.

How could this comparatively small election be so important? Because it summarizes every aspect of what will become a national battle for the future direction of the Republican Party.

Let me set the stage. No Democrats are in the race, so the winner of the Sept. 15 Republican primary will become senator. Among the major GOP candidates running is a longtime party establishment leader, former state speaker of the House John Thrasher. He enjoys the support of many elected officials, as well as that of former Gov. Jeb Bush. Thrasher was a tight ally of Bush, and of Bush’s family and the Bush political network.

The other major player in the race is businessman Dan Quiggle. He’s a political upstart who has virtually no ties to the Republican heavyweights. Quiggle’s chief qualification is that he once worked for Ronald Reagan once Reagan had left the White House. Quiggle is running on a conservative activist platform that seems to have propelled him into a dogfight with Thrasher. Quiggle is a new face, and he heads up the Florida chapter of Americans for Prosperity, a national group devoted to fighting taxes and big government.

Clearly something is going on in Florida. This is a tug-of-war that will be repeated in Republican primaries now through the 2012 presidential race.

Team Quiggle has released polling numbers that show him leading the race by nearly 9 percent.

But hold on. Our InsiderAdvantage poll of the race, conducted this week, shows things much tighter. Quiggle holds a one-point lead. That’s well within the survey’s margin of error. So for now, voters are evenly split.

So, you might say, this is just another close race between two Republicans, right? Absolutely wrong. These guys might as well be surrogates for the big dogs who will be running to determine the path the GOP takes in the future on a national stage.

Thrasher has all sorts of experience as a party leader, a former top legislator and a very successful lobbyist. He is older than Quiggle, but has a distinguished and attractive appearance. He represents the conservative but pragmatic side of the GOP that was exhibited by both President Bush 41 and President George W. Bush. Thrasher won’t likely rock any boats, but he will continue to carry the GOP baton.

Quiggle has a slightly more youthful look. He seems to be relying heavily on his avid involvement in recent conservative “tea parties” and on his support of concepts related to tax-and-spend government. Among those most supportive of Quiggle are those who identify themselves as “conservatives.” Many of them support the “Fair Tax” advocated by many conservative talk show hosts, such as Neal Boortz and Sean Hannity.

The net significance of this seemingly modest political square-off — it might draw 15,000 voters — is that it likely will tell us if the GOP establishment that has controlled the party in recent years will stand, or whether Republican voters might buck their own system, roll the dice and test the unknown.

Unlike pollsters who produce polls to please their clients, ours are conducted to meet very rigorous media standards. And our poll says, “Watch this race.” It’s anyone’s ballgame and may indicate bigger, future events for the Republican standard.

Another Day, another Fatwa.  Christians are once again being impaled against one pincer of the red crescent in Islamic dominant countries. But bear in mind,  this is not some new and extreme expression of the religion of piss, this is is just a reminder to the faithful of what the true believer in Islam must comply with or risk reprisals of there own.

Meanwhile, here in America the other pincer is quietly being inserted into our backsides as Obama prepares on September 25 for an expected 50,000 Muslims to attend a ” Day Of Islamic Unity” on Capital hill. Islamic prayers will soon roll across the reflecting pool to echo off the Lincoln Memorial.

On the surface these two things seem to have little in common, But consider this; In a country that preferentially gives Islam special standing and privileges to the exclusion of all others, are we not but one or two steps from it being illegal for any other religion to be given the same respect?  Especially if it is deemed “offensive” to the Muslim sensibility?

“Building a Church is a ‘Sin’ Against God, Says Egyptian Muslim Council,” by Mary Abdelmassih for AINA, August 31:

Cairo (AINA) — A controversial Fatwa (Islamic edict) prohibiting the construction of new churches in Egypt has provoked considerable discussion and spiraled into a crisis, involving the Fatwa Council, Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh, Christian and Muslim religious personalities, and the media. It was also reported on 8/26/2009 that the jurists who issued the Fatwa are under investigation on orders of the Grand Mufti and the Justice Minister.

The Fatwa (Arabic) in question was issued by the Al-Azhar affiliated “Dar el-Eftta” — Fatwa Council for Islamic interpretations of laws in Islam. It stated “the will of a Muslim towards building a Church is a sin against God, just as if he left his inheritance towards building a nightclub, a gambling casino, or building a barn for rearing pigs, cats or dogs.”

It was issued in response to an inquiry sent to the Fatwa Council by Dr. Naguib Gabraeel, President of the Egyptian Union Human Rights Organization (EUHRO), asking its opinion as to what he read in an article written by a prominent writer about what was stated in a textbook taught to third year students, Muslims and Christians, at the Faculty of Law, Cairo University, on Inheritance and execution of wills. Gabraeel’s inquiry pertained specifically to a quotation from the textbook “it is forbidden for a person to donate money for what would lead to sin, such as donating in his will money towards build a church, a nightclub, a gambling casino, towards promoting the alcohol industry or for building a barn for rearing pigs, cats or dogs.” He went on to inquire “So what is the Shari’a position to what was mentioned especially concerning the will of a Muslim to donate for the building of a church or a monk’s cell? If the answer is prohibition, aren’t these houses where the name of God is mentioned? Is not Christianity a recognized religion according to the Egyptian constitution? There are also a lot of wealthy Copts and Coptic businessmen who donate towards the building of mosques.”

The Fatwa Council replied affirming the correctness of what came in the textbook and issued a Fatwa on September 10, 2008 (document number 1809), which is also published on its official website.

To highlight the reason for this “sin” the Fatwa went on to state: “Salvation in the Christian religion is the belief in Jesus as Lord, where Muslims fundamentally disagree on it. Muslims believe that Issa [Jesus in Arabic] peace be upon him, is a slave of Allah and His Messenger, and that Allah is one. He begets not and He is not begotten and there is none like unto Him. So if it is seen that one sect has deviated from this absolute Monotheism, then according to that person’s own religion he is forbidden to donate for the erection of buildings where Allah is not worshiped alone.”

According to Mohammed el-Maghrabbi, deputy chief of the Faculty of Law, and author of the controversial textbook, what he wrote is a principle agreed upon by all Islamic jurists. He added that a will, if devoted by a Christian for building a Church, is forbidden and sinful and is considered in Islam as separation from God. So it is also illegal if a non-Muslim wills his inheritance towards building a Church or a Synagogue.

This Fatwa has shocked many as it classified churches with nightclub, gambling casinos, and places for rearing pigs and dogs, which are considered ‘unclean’ animals according to Islam and Muslims.

Miss Obama’s peacenik T-shirt sends a message to G8 leaders

Her father had just won agreement from the Russians to cut back on the world’s stockpiles of nuclear weapons.

And Barack Obama’s eldest daughter was obviously keen to make her own statement on the issue – even if it was merely a fashion statement.

Just 48 hours after the U.S. President signed agreements with Russian president Dmitry Medvedev to reduce weapon stores, 11-year-old Malia Obama was spotted wearing not one, but two T-shirts with an anti-nuclear message.

She wore the tops emblazoned with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament’s famous logo as her father prepared for three days of G8 talks in Italy.

First there was a grey T-shirt bearing the CND logo to visit the Colosseum in Rome with her mother Michelle and seven-year-old sister Sasha. Then during the visit she swapped it for a mottled white and grey top also bearing the logo.

The symbol, designed for the CND in 1958, is now widely used to signify peace and is also an international sign for anti-war protesters.

Mr Obama spent two days in Moscow this week meeting president Dmitry Medvedev and prime minister and former president  Vladimir Putin.

There the American and Russian leaders agreed a landmark deal to reduce their stockpiles of nuclear weapons.

Just keep in mind that Obama’s firing of an Inspector General is illegal because he did not submit his request to Congress 30 days before firing the IG.   Of course, Obama thinks he corrected that mistake by filing an after-the-fact letter, just yesterday.  But, that’s like closing the barn door after the cow has already got out.

The government watchdog President Obama canned for allegedly being “confused” and “disoriented” fired back sharply Wednesday, saying the White House explanation for removing him was “insufficient,” “baseless” and “absolutely wild.”

[It's not like we haven't heard those allegations before, remember Obama's God Factor interview in 2004?  Let me refresh your memory:

" They [the American people] get confused sometimes, watch FoxNews or listen to talk radio. That’s dangerous sometimes.”

In other words, if you are not a full-blown Commie Libtard team-player, you are labeled as “confused” and somehow “dangerous” by Obama and his sycophants.   Of course, these are Saul Alinsky’s tactics being used by Obama to ridicule and demean his opponents.]
Gerald Walpin, who until last week was the inspector general for the Corporation for National and Community Service, told FOXNews.com that part of Obama’s explanation was a “total lie” and that he feels he’s got a target on his back for political reasons.

“I am now the target of the most powerful man in this country, with an army of aides whose major responsibility today seems to be to attack me and get rid of me,” Walpin said.

Facing bipartisan criticism for the firing, Obama sought to allay congressional concerns with a letter to Senate leaders Tuesday evening explaining his decision. In the letter, White House Special Counsel Norman Eisen wrote that Walpin was “confused” and “disoriented” at a May board meeting, was “unduly disruptive,” and exhibited a “lack of candor” in providing information to decision makers.

“That’s a total lie,” Walpin said of the latter charge. And he said the accusation that he was dazed and confused at one meeting out of many was not only false, but poor rationale for his ouster.

“It appears to suggest that I was removed because I was disabled — based on one occasion out of hundreds,” he said.

“I would never say President Obama doesn’t have the capacity to continue to serve because of his (statement) that there are 56 states,” Walpin said, adding that the same holds for Vice President Biden and his “many express confusions that have been highlighted by the media.” Obama mistakenly said once on the campaign trail that he had traveled to 57 states.

Walpin concluded that his firing stems from bad blood between him and the board, as well as with Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson — an Obama supporter whom he had investigated for alleged misuse of federal funds. He said his performance at the May meeting drew criticism because he issued two reports critical of the board. In one, he criticized the settlement reached in the Johnson case; in the other, he criticized the use of millions of dollars for a program at the City University of New York.

“The board at that meeting was clearly angry at my temerity,” he said.

The White House, in its rationale for giving Walpin the boot, also complained that Walpin was “absent” from the corporation’s headquarters, “insisting” on working from home in New York over the “objections” of the board.

Walpin, though, said he reached an agreement with the agency early this year that would allow him to work from home. The former inspector general, who was appointed by George W. Bush, said he originally was going to resign before Obama took office because his wife of 52 years was not happy with their “commuting marriage” — he was commuting weekly from New York to Washington. He notified Bush of his intention to leave, but said his staff convinced him to reconsider.

In the end, Walpin said he worked out an agreement with corporation leaders under which he would travel to Washington two or more times a week, and spend the rest of the time working from home in New York. He said some board members had initial reservations, but they were resolved.

“I never had a single objection” before reading Tuesday’s letter from the White House, he said.

FBI arrest four in alleged plot to bomb Bronx synagogues, shoot down plane

The FBI and NYPD busted a four-man homegrown terror cell Wednesday night that was plotting to blow up two Bronx synagogues while simultaneously shooting a plane out of the sky, sources told the Daily News.

The idea was to create a “fireball that would make the country gasp,” one law enforcement said.

Little did they know the plastic explosives packed into their car bombs and the plane-downing Stinger missile in their backseat were all phony – supplied by undercover agents posing as Pakistani militants linked to Al Qaeda.

If one believes the official White House version, the purpose of the Air Force One flyover that scared the bejeezus out of New Yorkers was specifically for a photo-op to update some outdated photographs of Air Force One. And, now, Oama isn’t even going to release those photos…

Gee….  Imagine that.

But, of course, he has no problem releasing classified CIA documents and photos.  Especially, if it makes the previous administration look bad…

The $328,835 snapshots of an Air Force One backup plane buzzing lower Manhattan last week will not be shown to the public, the White House said yesterday.

“We have no plans to release them,” an aide to President Obama told The Post, refusing to comment further.
