Curse of Christine Open Thread

I have to run over to St. Louis today to help a friend look at a car.  I’ll probably be back sometime this afternoon.   Until then, feel free to post and comment here on any interesting news or tidbits you would like to share and discuss with everyone.

Islamist fires at Sarajevo US embassy

By Rusmir Smajilhodzic (AFP) – 2 hours ago

SARAJEVO — A suspected radical Islamist was wounded and arrested after opening fire Friday near the US embassy in Sarajevo, police said as Bosnian leader Bakir Izetbegovic condemned the “terrorist attack”.

“I firmly condemn the terrorist attack on the US embassy in Bosnia-Hercegovina, I expect the competent authorities to carry out a quick and efficient investigation of this senseless act,” Izetbegovic, the Muslim member of Bosnia’s three-man presidency said in a statement.

“The person who fired an automatic weapon was wounded and arrested during the police operation. After receiving medical treatment on the scene the person was hospitalised,” police spokesman Irfan Nefic told national BHT television.

He added that a local policeman guarding the embassy was severely wounded.

Earlier media reports said the man, identified as a member of the Wahhabi branch of Islam, was killed by a sniper after firing a Kalashnikov rifle at the US mission.

The local FTV station broadcast images shot with a mobile phone which show a bearded young man dressed in clothing often worn by local followers of the Wahhabi movement clutching an automatic rifle.

The television identified the alleged shooter as Mevlid Jasarevic, 23, from the southern Serbian city of Novi Pazar, home to a large Muslim community.

Serbian broadcaster B92 reported that Serbian police had stepped up security around the US embassy in Belgrade following the Sarajevo incident.

Serbian police said the suspected gunman was arrested in Serbia last year when police found he was carrying a knife during a visit by the US ambassador to Serbia Mary Warlick to the Sandzak region on the border between Serbia and Montenegro, which has an important Muslim community.

The US embassy spokeswoman Sanja Pejcinovic would not go into details of the attack, which took place around 3:35 pm (1335 GMT).

“We can confirm there has been an incident in front of the embassy,” she told AFP earlier on Friday.

“Several police patrols were sent to the scene. Two policemen were wounded, one in the leg and one in the head,” the radio reported.

Admir Hrenovica, an eyewitness interviewed on BHR1 television, said the gun shots lasted around 15 minutes.

“I first heard several bursts of gunfire and then single shots. People close to me threw themselves on the ground. It was total panic,” he said.

Bosnia is home to a small minority of followers of Wahhabism, a strict and ultra-conservative branch of Islam which is dominant in Saudi Arabia.

During Bosnia’s 1992-95 war between its Croat, Muslim and Serb communities, a large number of volunteers from Muslim nations flocked to the Balkan country to take up arms.

Many of these Muslim fighters stayed on after the conflict ended and obtained Bosnian citizenship. Some in the mostly moderate Bosnian Muslim community have converted to the more radical Islam preached by several ex-mujahedeen.

Goodness gracious, did they not get the memo?
Implicating violent actions from the Wahhabi sect of Islam is to implicate a specific religion and religious ideal, and that is just plain wrong.

Nevermind that the Saudi Wahhabi sect is the spawn of all of the terrorist linked organizations, including the Muslim Brotherhood, and that 80% of the mosques in the US are funded by, and run by, Wahhabi islam.
