Billy Dean Riley

Woman Shoots Intruder Dead
KSBITV

At 12:30 Donna Jackson woke up to her dog barking like someone was in her backyard. She went to to her backdoor and sure enough she was face to face with a man trying to break in.

“Oh he’s getting ready to break the window,” said Jackson to the dispatcher.

Jackson immediately went and got her shotgun, hoping an officer would get there so she didn’t have to use it.

But the man trying to break in had other plans, he then grabbed some patio furniture and broke the back door.

“Dear god hurry. I haven’t shot yet. Hurry,” said Jackson.

“Can you get…oh my god. Ma’am, do you have a cordless phone,” said the dispatcher.

“I shot him,” said Jackson.

Jackson shot Billy Dean Riley right in the chest, killing him instantly.

The shooting is being investigated as a homicide but the sheriff says Jackson did what she had to do.

“This was nothing more than a home invasion and Mrs. Jackson was defending herself,” said Lincoln County Sheriff Charles Mangion.

Here’s the loooooong 911 call that was released to the public:

While listening to this, remember:  The police are just seconds away…  Any moment, now…  Tick-tick-tick…  Where the hell are they?  20 minutes later…

I had an interesting thought as I followed the story. At first I was appalled that the tape was released with her address and the location of the gate key. But ten minutes or so later when she shot him graveyard dead, it occurred to me that she probably won’t be getting too many uninvited visitors anytime soon.

I’m a tree-hugging, Mexican refugee watering, conservative Republican after the fashion of Thomas Jefferson and those other liberals that wrote the constitution. I have a loaded rifle or shotgun leaning up against the wall in every room in my trailer. I shoot neo-cons, no questions asked.

I’m a Proud Republican for Obama!

It’s time for change–stop fighting progress and quit swillin’ the neo-con kook-aid. It rots yer teeth, and may put some other holes in your head.

    >^;^<

    • SKR Says:

Cherryl, real conservatives don’t vote for Marxists: we are polar opposites of communists. Why you even bring up Obama, particularly in the context of this event, makes your whole post suspicious. If he and his party had their way, none of us, including you, would be allowed to have guns, and Donna would be in a morgue drawer tonight.

You’re oddly willing to shoot political opponents, and yet you enable people to break our laws, even very possibly allowing Mexican gang members to rob, rape and murder our citizens. You’re drinking the hoax-and-change koolaid, then chiinge the rest of us for fighting a deficit progressing rapidly in the wrong direction and the continuing loss of employment, employers and investors who are reeling from government takeover of their property.

Donna is an extremely brave woman, not to mention a smart one. A shotgun is the best weapon for such an occasion. Those who treasure life will tend to regret having to take someone else’s. May God bless her with peace and the knowledge that she may have prevented future harm to others, as well as to herself.

      • Cherryl Says:

An you would be wrong. I’ve been a Republican for over 35 years and I know what a real Republican looks like. They are anti-union, fiscally conservative, and Libertarian, all policies that I fully support. I own my own home, vehicles, and business outright. The one main conservative value that I uphold is the biblical proscription against debt.

And I view Mexicans as Native Americans, not criminals. The few criminal who do come through are also not a worry because I am armed and cautious. The real criminals are folks like you who happily exploit these immigrants for your 49 cent a pound chickens and your cheap produce. You couldn’t afford to eat if there were no immigrants to support you. The government knows this and the neo-cons are great at pointing the finger at the wrong suspects while perpetuating the situation that gives them free labor for their lawns and kitchens.

I have not voted for a single neo-con and the fact that the evil bushwhacker regime managed to take out the economy in just a few short years is proof that he was a neo-con puppet. The Bush Doctrine is anti-Republican and was extended from forcing other countries to the neo-con agendas, to forcibly changing American social, political, and moral practices.

You were closer to losing your precious guns to the failed Rumsfeld-Cheney regime than you will ever experience under Obama. Ever! You folks who bought up all the ammo where just scared little children. I’m a real Republican. I’ve had my ammo stockpiled since Kennedy was assassinated.

      Republican? Jefferson? Baloney.

“To take from one because it is thought that his own industry and that of his father’s has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association—the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it.”Thomas Jefferson

“I think myself that we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious.” Thomas Jefferson

“To compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.” Thomas Jefferson

      Just a few of many.

While President, Jefferson wrote that “The appointment of a woman to office is an innovation for which the public is not prepared, nor am I.”

      • Cherryl Says:

He was definitely a man of his times, but with the vision to build a country that would grow with the changing times. Keyword: change. Have you read the Jefferson Bible?

“And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. But may we hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with this artificial scaffolding, and restore to us the primitive and genuine doctrines of this most venerated reformer of human errors.”

Source: Letter of Thomas Jefferson to John Adams, April 11, 1823.

“I concur with you strictly in your opinion of the comparative merits of atheism and demonism, and really see nothing but the latter in the being worshipped by many who think themselves Christians.”

-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Richard Price, Jan. 8, 1789

“The whole history of these books (i.e. the Gospels) is so defective and doubtful that it seems vain to attempt minute enquiry into it: and such tricks have been played with their text, and with the texts of other books relating to them, that we have a right, from that cause, to entertain much doubt what parts of them are genuine. In the New Testament there is internal evidence that parts of it have proceeded from an extraordinary man; and that other parts are of the fabric of very inferior minds. It is as easy to separate those parts, as to pick out diamonds from dunghills.”

Source: Letter of Thomas Jefferson to John Adams, January 24, 1814.

        • tgusa Says:

Change is not a keyword, Germany had change in the 1930’s Cambodia had change during the 1970’s. And yes even Mexico had change. If you will recall there was a competition between the British and the Spanish several hundred years ago. The Spanish went to the Southern hemisphere and the British the Northern hemisphere.

There used to be indigenous peoples down there until the Spanish arrived. Today the remnants of those poor people are being driven out and up here by the descendants of the Spanish. You support the Spanish and their continued quest without realizing it. We still have indigenous peoples of North America here among us we are not driving them south.

If the USA encompassed Mexico we probably would not be having this problem it would be confined to the southern hemisphere.

          • Cherryl Says:

Change is always the keyword. Without “change” your ancestors wouldn’t have been driven out of Europe based a disagreement among faux-christian factions, sects, and cults within. The Columbian exchange caused a lot of damage to my people, but I’m proud that we never lived on a reservation, per the Old Settlers Act of Oklahoma. My people embraced change and were able to avoid conscription into the “indian schools”. We kept our traditions and our values. I am a tree-hugging, Mexican watering, conservative Republican. I know for a fact that change will do you a lot of good no matter how long you cling to the kook-aid and the neo-con blinders. Keep hoping that change won’t happen, and proudly wear the name of “Tory”. If you even know what that is.

  2. janet Says:

she protected her life, her turf and her dog!!…Thank God she had a dog to warn her an intruder was there

    • sherrell stover Says:

You betcha’. I’d rather live with the horror of having killed him than to know that he’d rot in HELL because he’d killed me.
The woman at the Sheriff’s office did nothing wrong, AT ALL.

  3. janet Says:

God Bless the dispatcher..it seems to be the only support she had for 25 minutes of agony

    • sherrell stover Says:

It should be a given… You break into my house and come toward me, I shoot you. It’s just common sense.

  4. WI woman Says:

Oh Donna, my heart goes out to you! I cannot fathom what it is you may be feeling at the thought of taking another human life. You are in my thoughts and prayers – God was and IS with you. Blessings to you today and always.

  5. Bob in Florida Says:

Good shootin Donna! Proof again that the government can’t protect us.

    • sherrell stover Says:

The government isn’t responsible for protecting you in a case like this. You are responsible for protecting yourself. The buck stops here. No one is more responsible for us than we are for ourselves, our children and our elderly. If we ever give that up, we would no longer deserve it, anyway.

  6. Franco Says:

I would like to have heard the radio traffic of Patrick Strange when he placed the body into custody. Naturally, he had to wait until the medics made the announcement that that scumbag was dead. Not only dead, but tresspassing on a old lady’s back porch dead. Although it took a long time for the police to arrive, the perps trial took a second or two when he declared himself eligible for the death penalty by trying to force his way into Donna’s home. Thank God and our forefathers for the 2nd Amendment!!!

  7. jeff Says:

The dispatcher announcement they are playing on air is about someone knocking on the door. Who knocks if breaking in. She does not warn him, she just shoots. His truck broke down, maybe he just needed help and if no one was coming to door he was going to break in empty house and call police. Why did she not shout to earn him or whatever. This needs to be investigated. We don’t know all sides just yet.

    • Jeff said, “Who knocks if breaking in.”

LOTS of robbers knock before entering. Here’s one from Tuesday (just two days ago):

      http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20091209/NEWS02/912090373/Man+found+dead+following+altercation+report+near+Salem

A man who came to the homeowner’s door asked to use the telephone, police said, and the homeowner agreed. But the man and a second suspect then came into the house and attacked the homeowner, who was able to get a gun and fired multiple shots.

The dead man, who had knocked on the door, was identified as Ronald L. Chastain, 36, of Salem. Washington County Coroner Rondale Brishaber determined the cause of death as gunshot wounds.

So, your statement has no merit.

      Cheers

    • Greg Says:

You got to be kidding me! Donna did the right thing. No one has the right to break into someone’s home no matter what the circumstances. Knocking first to see what kind of resistance they’re up against is pretty common.

    • patty Says:

Jeff….you are an idiot! she had every right to shoot him; way to go Donna! I’m tired of criminals having more rights than us! I’m going home this evening and learning how to shoot the 45 in my closet!

  8. jeff Says:

She could have tried, “stop or I’ll shoot!” She’s pretty much a friggin’ idiot who will now have to live with killing a man.

    • Leatherneck Says:

It is to bad it was not me. I would have buried the body with just enough brush so the buzzards, and bugs could get their fill.

“To hell with them felleas, buzzards got eat, same as worms.”

The only stupid idiot is you jeff. What are you a New Age Marxist fool still living with his mother?

      STFU!

    • Cherryl Says:

Don’t be ridiculous. Grandmothers with shotguns do not need to take surveys or take prisoners. As my daddy always said, if you have to pull out your weapon you’d better use and use it well. Kudos to Mrs. Jackosn.

Mrs. Jackson did not get stinking drunk and seek Billy’s company that night. It was the other way around.

  9. tyler Says:

How far away are these police that it takes them THAT long to get to a woman in distress?! And Jeff, if this man was trying to get to a phone, breaking into someone’s house in the middle of the night is a tremendously stupid way to do that. Banging on doors, yelling, breaking in… how stupid would you have to be to not do what she did?

  10. jaz Says:

who wrote the constitution? I believe it was Dem. and Rep. together. I am a Dem. and I have guns, as many Dems. do. I am not afraid of the Rep. fear factor. Give it up. There are Rep. that dont like guns either. I believe Mr. Brady was a Rep.

    • Uhm, you better go back and study the history of our Founding Fathers. You are gravely mistaken to think that it was the Democrats and Republicans who wrote the U.Constitution.

The closest thing to separate political parties at the time of the writing of the U.S. Constitution were the Federalists and anti-Federalists. However, they still weren’t even official parties at that time.

Political parties did not exist in 1789!

Also, as a side note, George Washington was not affiliated with any political party. In fact, he abhorred political factions.

The “Democratic-Republican Party” was founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison around 1792. That’s right, Democrats and Republicans use to be one party!

Yup, that’s why you Democrats are so screwed up; you don’t know your American history.

      P.S. – I am NOT a Republican!

      Cheers

  11. Erik and his books Says:

I would have warned/asked questions before shooting.
Would you shoot somebody without warning, letting him the option of retreat?

    • Armymom Says:

      To Eric and his book:
First off, I would hope I could stay as calm as this woman did while I did exactly what she did.

As for warning him, she waited until he broke in to shoot. If she saw him (which she did. She even gave his description to the dispatcher ) don’t you think he saw her??? And if he did (without a doubt he did) then he saw her on the phone AND he saw the gun, yet he STILL chose to break in. This man had ample opportunity to turn around and high tail it back the way he came. He didn’t. He got inside her home without an invitation. She didn’t shoot until then.
My heart breaks for this woman for what she had to do, but I also applaud her.

  12. Darcy H Says:

I don’t think breaking into someone’s house with a patio table give you any reasonable expectation NOT to be shot. The cocking of the shotgun is plenty of advance warning–the sound is unmistakable.

  13. Max fr NYC Says:

I feel compassion this woman and the intruder. I am a bible believer and JC allowed for his diciples to carry one weapon with them. I too am a woman living alone and intend to purchase a gun for just such a problem. The police are reactive, not proactive. I love and respect life, but too many others don’t.

    thanks

    • Cherryl Says:

Yeshua allowed his followers to carry two swords. He said “that is enough”.

I urge you to take a gun owner’s safety class as soon as you can. They will teach you how to carry, load, clean, and fire a weapon safely. Then ask their advice on what weapon to acquire. Guns are not mysterious, though they are inherently dangerous. You will benefit greatly from becoming familiar with them in a controlled setting.

  14. Sixth Shot Says:

“I would have warned/asked questions before shooting.
Would you shoot somebody without warning, letting him the option of retreat?”

Why yes! I would shoot somebody without warning! If that somebody had busted the glass on any of my doors or windows and attempted to break into my home, day or night!

And furthermore, I would have still shot the perp even while they were retreating, if they had damaged my house because if they get away then I would not have any reasonable assurance that I would be compensated.

And guess what? I am a Texan. And we have the right to wield deadly force at night to stop even vandalism, or property theft along with defending one’s own life or lives of their loved ones.

Don’t like it? Then stay the hell out of Texas!

    • CavMom Says:

Agreed. I am not going to holler out any warnings and give up my position to the intruder. Furthermore, shooting until DEAD, removes the State from obligations of housing the criminal and tying up the courts. We are saving tax payers a bundle.

The victim was Donna and she acted in the only plausible manner to protect herself. If one were to follow the news at all, they would know that it does little good to ask the bad guy to play nice.

  15. Sixth Shot Says:

Stop or I’ll shoot Jeff. You have now been warned!

  16. Proactive is my middle name Says:

Whoever it was (not naming any names) that said that police are REACTIVE and not PROACTIVE threw that statement out to the public without regard to many police officers that primarily are assigned to jobs that only PROACTIVE work is done. As a police officer assigned to one of gthe PROACTIVE jobs I can assure you that it takes a lot of hoof work to discover a criminal enterprise and follow it though to an arrest and ultimately to a conviction. I recently became discouraged as I could not seem to find a primary suspect who dealt in the shadyness of the Illegal Narcotics Enterprise. Six months after the initial investigation I lucked out and now this Criminal will be going to prison for the better part of his life. If you would like to make a general statement to the public about Police I encourage you to go to your local police station and ride with an Officer for an entire shift. Ask all the questions that you feel inclined then make your judgement. As for this case above I applaud this woman for not becoming a further victim of crime. I myself would and will do anything to come home at night or to keep my family safe.

    • Ronin Says:

From your post it sounded like you thought, a few of us were bashing cops, not the case. We do appreciate the fine work you do but look at this from our point of view, an insiders family member had to wait for thirty minutes for help. Some of us think it might take even longer for us. The issue is not as easy as pro/reactive. It is all numbers, how many officers are on duty, how many are on patrol, where are they and are they already busy with something else. The odds are not good; if we need an officer, they will probably arrive late

    • tgusa Says:

It is an uncomfortable situation for all. The police must understand that they are seen as doing the politicians bidding not the peoples. The police need to make amends for standing by while our country was invaded. They must make an effort to prove to the people that they are not selling us out to the politicians. We have seen our rights eroded while the criminal and non citizen and even Islamic jihadists have seen their rights grow.

The police and the people either need each other or they don’t there is no middle ground. Here is an idea, lets have the police go after known violent criminals while we protect our selves and our property. That’s what we need police for not to arrest a five year old at kindergarten for misbehaving.. It is not just the police it is the schools the politicians and yes some of our citizens that is a mess.in my opinion cleaning up the other messes will free up the police to pursue the dangerous ones.

Above all the police and the people must realize that we have to work together although each of us have different responsibilities, the other side, the side that is giving the police their marching orders are a lawless lot. Law abiding people are the policeman’s friends. Remember when the police and fire were busy on 9-11? The people stepped up and stopped another plane. We will complain until the police start to complain about their leadership. We are not the polices adversaries the ones I mentioned earlier are. We need to take back our country and we sure could use the polices help in that.

Besides, this is what you end up with going along with leftards.

Eventually they will blame you directly.
It is always someone else’s fault with leftists. United we stand.
Merry Christmas Proactive and thanks for your service.

      • Sixth Shot Says:

“The police must understand that they are seen as doing the politicians bidding not the peoples. The police need to make amends for standing by while our country was invaded.”

“Here is an idea, lets have the police go after known violent criminals while we protect our selves and our property.”

What police??? Don’t automatically assume that everybody has police around. I don’t. I live in a rural county in Texas. We only have sheriffs.

And what you are proposing about citizens protecting themselves and property while the “police” go after the bigger problems isn’t a novel idea. It’s one that’s borne out throughout Texas by necessity.

For you see there are only two sheriffs on-duty in this county at night. That’s right for the whole county! And it’s a fairly large county!

And depending on the roster and roll of the dice sometimes one sheriff has one-arm and the other is a 110lb woman. And you want the woman! Cuz she’s a better shot!

But an average call (if they even show up at all) takes about an hour and 15 minutes to my area. Once had some poachers try to run me down when I Q-beamed them to get a license plate and I emptied a magazine into their truck and it took a deputy an hour and a half to get here. Not much he could do. Didn’t have a plate number except the first letter. It was covered with mud. They ran a check on the local hospitals and the like in case I wounded anybody. Nada. Better luck next time! What I didn’t get was some stupid lecture about staying in my house behind locked doors and calling 911. The deputy said that he would have shot the miserable curs too if they tried to run him down. Who wouldn’t besides some jaded liberal?

We are free sovereign citizens of Texas. We don’t readily cater to such foolish notions as “cowering” and “hiding” in our homes. We have the right to be out and about on our properties ANY TIME OF THE DAY OR NIGHT. Who dare try to say otherwise!

We ARE the law east of the Pecos out here. Sheriff’s deputies often tell newcomers from the city to this area to consign themselves to doing “whatever it takes” and having the appropriate equipment and firepower to defend one’s self and property because they will be the first to tell you that you cannot logically expect the law to be there for you or to be of much help in most instances. That’s not a slight on the poor overworked deputies, it’s just the way that it is!

And they tell you to get your spouse trained with as big of a hand cannon as they can handle and use effectively and that having a 3rd party such as a police firearms instructor works much better as they will usually pay better attention and absorb more.

Plus a Concealed Handgun License is the way to go! And keep the guns loaded “as they are worthless if they are not” (Hello!) and be prepared to use them.

And some of the newbies get a little weak-kneed but recover and catch on and make fine neighbors after awhile. Others don’t last too long and run back to the safety of the city with their herd mentality (and frequent driveway robberies, just like a big lottery).

We don’t hear of driveway robberies out here! Just plain foolhardy to follow somebody home that you don’t know. Good way to get shot!

Nothing new here about any of this. It’s pretty much the way it’s been for a few hundred years now.

Self-reliance and independence is the order of the day. Trusting strangers in blue or brown uniforms who you often may have never met before to do a job that YOU SHOULD DO YOURSELF is not a strange idea or concept.

        • tgusa Says:

You missed the sarcasm in that proposal and you missed my entire point which was yes all of us have a right to protect ourselves. You know when I was a young man we didn’t have 911 to call or a police department either, not even a squad car we had to go thirty miles just to get a pair of shoes we got by anyway. I don’t intend to start relying on others after all this time.
