An Afghan father, his wife and their son have been jailed for life after a jury found them guilty of killing three teenage sisters and a co-wife in what the judge described as a ‘despicable’ and ‘heinous’ crime.

The jury had taken 15 hours to find Mohammad Shafia, 58, his wife Tooba Yahya, 42; and their son Hamed, 21, each guilty of four counts of first-degree murder.

The four bodies were found in June 2009 in a car submerged in a canal in Kingston, Ontario, where the family had stopped for the night on their way home from Niagara Falls.

Prosecutors said the daughters were killed because they dishonored the family by defying rules on dress, dating, socialising and going online.

After the verdict was read, the three defendants again declared their innocence in the killings of sisters Zainab, 19, Sahar 17, and Geeti, 13, as well as Rona Amir Mohammad, 52, Shafia’s childless first wife in a polygamous marriage.

After the jury returned the verdicts, Mohammad Shafia, speaking through a translator, said: ‘We are not criminal, we are not murderer, we didn’t commit the murder and this is unjust.’

His weeping wife, Tooba, also declared the verdict unjust. She said: ‘I am not a murderer, and I am a mother, a mother.’

Their son, Hamed, speaking in English said: ‘I did not drown my sisters anywhere.’

But Judge Robert Maranger was unmoved, saying the evidence clearly supported their conviction for ‘the planned and deliberate murder of four members of your family’.

‘It is difficult to conceive of a more despicable, more heinous crime … the apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your completely twisted concept of honor … that has absolutely no place in any civilized society.’

PHOENIX — An Iraqi immigrant accused of killing his daughter because he believed she was too Westernized goes on trial this month in Arizona in a case that raised awareness about incidents of so-called “honor killings” in the U.S.
-AP might not like it but that is the term muslims use for murdering a family member. Almost as bad as the act is the approval from the local muslim communities.

Faleh Hassan Almaleki, 50, faces life in prison if convicted. In October 2009, he slammed his Jeep into his daughter, Noor Almaleki, 20, prosecutors said.

The woman, who longed to live a normal American life, was in a coma for two weeks before succumbing to her injuries, in a case that caused outrage from people nationwide.

Faleh Almaleki moved his family from Iraq to the Phoenix suburb of Glendale in the mid-1990s. He and Noor Almaleki had a tumultuous relationship, according to police and court records, and her close friends.

At 17, she refused to enter into an arranged marriage in Iraq, enraging her father, according to a court document filed by prosecutors.

At 19, Noor Almaleki moved into her own apartment and began working at a fast food restaurant but quit and left her new place after her parents kept showing up at her work, insisting that she return home, the document said.
-The sad thing is Arizona is a right to carry state, she could be alive and dad could be swapping spit in hell with mohammed.

In the first incident of its kind, a Palestinian family has killed its 15-year-old son in the West Bank after accusing him of “collaboration” with Israel.
-That statement is not actually true, many suspected collaborators have been murdered but normally by a mob and not just family members.

Raed Wael Sawalha’s body was discovered in the basement of a house in his village of Hijjah in the Kalkilya area on Wednesday.
-These homes are stacked close together but strangely enough, no neighbors attempted to stop this or call the police.

The Palestinian Authority security forces announced that they have arrested a number of the boy’s family members in connection with the killing.
-If they had killed a daughter and claimed it was to protect “family honor” the police would have walked away but boys are special.

The suspects confessed, saying they decided to kill Sawalha because of his alleged connections with the Israeli authorities, PA security sources said.
-Catch the “alleged” they murdered their own child on a rumor.

OTTAWA — A man charged in the “honour killing” of his sister and her lover has been convicted of their murders.
-Renaming these murders does not change them or explain them away.

A jury found Hasibullah Sadiqi guilty of two counts of first degree murder Saturday morning.
-Add three more wasted lives to islams total of hundreds of millions.

The decision carries an automatic sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 25 years.
-He got off lightly in my view.

Sadiqi was on trial facing allegations he shot his sister, Khatera, and her fiance, Feroz Mangal, in a planned and deliberate fashion driven by outrage over the couple’s engagement.

Earlier this week Mark Moors, an assistant Crown attorney on the case, characterized the killings as “two murders committed for the sole purpose of restoring the family’s reputation and respect in the Afghan community.”

Khatera refused to have her father involved in the engagement and moved in with Mangal’s family before marriage.
-We will never know the issue between father and daughter but I’m guessing he was a typical overbearing muslim male and treated her as property.

Another day another muslim wife murdered and no one cares.

RAWALPINDI: The family of a young girl killed in cold blood by her husband and mother-in-law has been shuttling between the offices of Regional Police Officer (RPO) Nasir Khan Durrani and City Police Officer (CPO) Rao Muhammad Iqbal for justice for over two months but of no avail.
-Muslims make murder a family event. This crime will likely be glossed over like hundreds of others when the family explains that it was to protect family honor.

Blinking back his tears, Usman Ali, the brother of ill-fated Saba Sehar, 22, told Daily Times in a choked voice that his sister was married to Azhar Aziz, a resident of Adiala Road, last year.

He said in February this year Azhar in assistance with his mother, Azizun Nisa, beat his sister in revenge for not giving the hand of their youngest sister to his younger brother. They beat Saba black and blue, and when she collapsed on the floor from torture and demanded water, Azhar poured acid in her mouth.
-No mention of the sisters age but I doubt she was much more than a child.

Usman said that his family shifted Saba to Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Hospital (BBSH) where she succumbed to injuries on March 13.

Suspended between life and death, the victim narrated the entire episode to the investigation officer of Saddar Bairooni police. The police registered a case under Section 302/34 against Azhar and his mother and sent the former to Adiala Jail on judicial remand. However, his mother being co-accused was not arrested despite registration of an FIR.

In her death statement registered by the police, Saba said, “My mother-in-law grabbed me by hair, while my husband punched and kicked me, making me almost unconscious. When I fell down on the ground and was in a daze, I called for water. But my husband poured a glassful of acid in my mouth.”
-Cue the typical muslim rants about this being cultural and not related to islam. Reality is sharia law gives the man total control over his wife. Normally this just means a life of slavery and abuse but occasionally the wife er victim is murdered in the name of honor.

-I would have prefeared the entire family have been arrested, honor murderers are a family affair. It is highly unlikely any one of them was surprised by the crime. It is more likely that they all helped plan it and lull the victim into a false sense of security.

Police in Atlanta have been investigating the death of a 25-year-old Pakistani woman, who was allegedly murdered by her father in the name of family honor.

She wanted out of an arranged marriage, but her father thought a divorce would bring
shame to the family.

Honor killings are old rites of murder within families, committed because of some perceived dishonor or shame. The United Nations estimates around 5,000 deaths occur each year — mostly of women, mostly in South Asia and the Middle East.
-Those numbers are low many are never reported.

A Quiet Street

Detective Mike Christian of the Clayton County Police Department has lived in Jonesboro, a suburb of Atlanta, all his life.

“Supposedly Tara — the big plantation from ‘Gone with the Wind’ — this is where it was located,” Christian says of the family’s home.

Past the cemetery where the flag still flies, he pulls into a quiet street with tidy brickfront two-story homes.

“That’s it — 9816,” he says. “They’ve got a ‘for sale’ sign in the yard. The window to her bedroom is open.”

It was around 1 a.m. on July 6 when police got several 911 calls connected to that house. The first was from a man who told police, “My daughter’s dead.” Then, at 1:55 a.m., Clayton County received a 911 call from a woman named Gina Rashid who was worried about her stepdaughter, Sandeela.
-In many of the cases the entire family is not only aware this is going to happen but often they participate.

A 20-year-old Bedouin woman, Samar Abu Jumah, was murdered in the southern city of Ashkelon Saturday in what police are suspecting was an “honor killing.” The victim’s 2-year-old daughter, who was unharmed in the attack, was found next to her mother.

Police and Magen David Adom (MDA) ambulance service received a report Saturday regarding a body of a woman found in an Ashkelon apartment. An MDA doctor pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The woman is believed to have been stabbed to death. Meanwhile, the child has been handed over to welfare officials.

A medic at the scene said the woman was found in a pool of blood and without vital signs.

“From what we understood, the neighbors heard screams and the baby crying, so they called the fire fighters and police in order to break into the apartment,” he said. “The woman apparently died a long time before that. There were many blood stains in the room.”

Ashkelon Police Chief Haim Blumenfeld told Ynet that the victim’s boyfriend was taken in for questioning.

“He said that he hasn’t seen her since Friday morning, and provided no further details regarding her death,” he said.

Many Jordanians consider sex out of wedlock a stain on a family’s reputation. An average of 20 Jordanian women are killed by relatives every year in so-called honor killings.

The numbers are probably much higher as many of these crimes are never reported but even one is disgraceful.

He was charged with two counts of murder and spoke only to confirm his name and address when he appeared at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court.

The sisters, aged 19 and 22, were discovered in the flat they shared in the Ladywood area of the city on Monday.

The Algerian-born sisters were British nationals and had only lived in their flat in the Jupiter Apartments for a few weeks.
